More about the Sacred Valley
The Sacred Valley is located just outside of Cusco, between Cusco and Machu Picchu. The valley is home to picturesque colonial villages such as Pisac, Urubamba, Ollantaytambo and Chincheros and fascinating pre-Colombian ruins. There鈥檚 a lot of history, culture, and natural beauty to be discovered here.
The main road that crosses the valley runs from Pisac to Ollantaytambo. Pisac is world-famous for the artisan or 鈥淚ndian Market,鈥 a great spot to pick up handcrafted jewellery, textiles, glass, and other unique objects. An alternative, less tourist and more local market is in Chincheros.
Ollantaytambo has a top-preserved Inca Fortress as well as pre-Inca ruins. In addition, the village itself has some amazing Inca walls. The Valley runs west all the way to Machu Picchu, Peru鈥檚 best known archaeological site. This ancient citadel remains the most spectacular sight in Latin America.
Machu Picchu
For centuries it was buried in the jungle, until the lost Inca town was 鈥榙iscovered鈥 in 1911. The combination of Inca ruins, unforgettable views, magnificent mountains, exotic vegetation and extraordinary ecological variety make Machu Picchu truly a unique experience.
Apart from Machu Picchu, there are numerous pre-Hispanic archaeological ruins in this area built by different Incas and used as citadels or resting places. Many are only accessible through the famous Inca Trail, a four-day trek to Machu Picchu.
